Typically, the “safest” bets are found on the outer perimeters of the roulette table. Called, “outside bets” this wagers don’t offer the dazzling payout ratios of more risky bets. However, they do offer other advantages to gamblers, because these bets have a higher likelihood of working out for those who make them. If you want a win in roulette, rather than losing out, you’ll benefit from learning about outside bets and what they offer.
RED - When you look at a roulette table, you will see the word “Red” in a marked box that is almost dead center on the outside of the layout. By putting down at least the minimum bet in this area, you’re wagering that the next number that hits will be the color red. If you’re right, you’re a winner. The payout ratio is 1 to 1 (even odds).
BLACK – As with the red bet, if you put the correct amount of chips on the black labeled box, which is located near the red box, you will win if the next number comes up black. This bet also pays out at 1 to 1.
EVEN - This bet is located typically at the left of the red box. By wagering in the even box, you are predicting that the next number which hits will be an even number. If it’s even, you are a winner. This wager pays even money, or 1 to 1. For example, if you place a $5 chip on even and the number 4 shows, you will be paid $5, and your original stake will be returned to you.
ODD – As with the even bet, the odd wager signifies that the gambler who puts a bet in the odd box is counting on an odd number to be the next number to hit. This bet pays 1 to 1.
LOW BET (1-18) - This bet signifies that the gambler is counting on the numbers 1-18 to show on the next turn of the wheel. The payout for this bet is even money (1-1). For example, to bet $10 on the numbers 1-18, you put $10 in the box marked “low” (which may also be marked as “1-18”), which is located on the outside of the layout, at to the left of the even box.
HIGH BET (19-36) - This wager is all about wagering that the next turn of the wheel will showcase a winning number from 19-36. This bet is also situated on the outside of the layout, and the payout is 1 to 1. The “high” or “19-36” box is usually found next to the odd box.
COLUMN BET - A player is wagering on a specific column of numbers in order to show when they make this bet. Remember, there are three rows or columns of numbers, not including the 0, 00. These wagers are located at the base of each column of numbers. The payout for the column bet is 2 to 1. To cite an example, if you wager on the column of numbers 1-34 by placing a $10 chip in the 2 to 1 box, you will win $20 if the numbers hit.
DOZEN BET - This is wagering that a dozen numbers will show up on the next spin of the wheel. For example, you may wager on the first dozen (1-12), the second dozen (13-24), or the third dozen (25-36). This bet also pays out at 2 to 1, just the same as the column wager.
